Qualitative Face Fit Testing
Qualitative Face Fit Testing
Face Fit Testing is a method for checking that a respirator face piece provides an adequate seal to an individual’s facial features.
Face fit testing is required in the initial selection process for all tight-fitting facepieces under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations. This is to ensure the wearer has a correctly fitting device. Qualitative face fit testing needs to be carried out to ensure your employees are protected with suitably fitted respirators. Pre-use checks of the respirators are also necessary to make sure the user and respirator are fit for use.

Course Content
Where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used, it must be able to provide adequate protection for individual wearers. RPE can’t protect the wearer if it leaks. A major cause of leaks is poor fit – tight-fitting facepieces need to fit the wearer’s face to be effective.
As people come in all shapes and sizes, it is unlikely that one particular type or size of RPE facepiece will fit everyone. Fit testing for RPE will ensure that the equipment selected is suitable for the wearer.
Each face fits will take approx. 20mins to complete, multiple delegates can be scheduled at intervals if required.
For more detailed information on fit testing RPE, read the publication: Guidance on respiratory protective equipment (RPE) fit testing INDG479.

Assessment & Certification:
This face fit testing course will consist of 7 tasks, and delegates must pass all 7 tasks to be suitable for the respirator they need to wear. Upon successfully completing these 7 tasks, a face fit certificate will be awarded.
Respirators which are used as your primary source of protection will need to be re-tested on an annual basis.
It is also recommended that respirators that may not be your primary source of protection have testing conducted on a bi-annual basis.
